Before flying to Saigon from Cambodia we decided to find a little piece of beach heaven. This is what we found on Koh Rong Island, a forty-five minute boat ride from the coastal town of Sihanoukville on the Gulf of Thailand (southern tip of Cambodia near the border with Vietnam).
Our beautiful beach strip: top, view from our verandah (looks pebbly because it rained at night); bottom: view from lounge/dining area.
Our hut at Puravita Resort was basic but functional and right at the beach. The sand was stunningly beautiful – squeaky-fine and white, the water warm and the more touristy area of the island well out of sight and hearing distance. Peaceful. Beautiful. And there is nothing better than being lulled to sleep by the sound of sea waves!
Again, after visiting (and loving) Saigon we decided to take in an area in central-south Vietnam. We chose Cam Ranh – thus avoiding the busy beach/ party city of nearby Nha Trang, in favour of calm.
Left column : Le Kim Luyen and her beachfront restaurant and yummy freshly grilled seafood on Bai Dai beach. Right column: views from motorbike while meandering out from our hotel, Dragon Bay, located on the inlet.
The beaches here are indeed lovely but with cooler ocean water (still warm by most standards) and less magnificant sand. This area is seafood capital and we stuffed ourselves accordingly. At Kim Luyen’s restaurant we could even wiggle our toes in the occasional waves that lapped at our lounge chairs.
Bai Dai Beach: ‘Pictures worth a thousand words’.
