It’s not a new discovery but Hoi An, Vietnam, is now our favourite hang-out small city in SE Asia. Highly recommend on many accounts.
- Its charm. Unfortunately my MG 3 phone is my sole instrument for picture taking/doing this blog. It can’t handle night pictures, when this town lays on its magic and charm!
I celebrated my birthday here and our hostess made it extra special: bbq and cake!
- It’s wonderful hospitality. We had a strong recommendation from like-minded travelers (thank you Karen and Adam!) and Camilla Homestay was just perfect. Half way between the beaches and old town, we had bikes at our disposal and cheap taxis.
- Mecca for tailoring particularly with silk. Oh and shoemaking…made to your specifications. Other stuff too (beautiful silk lanterns).
Looking huge with my tailor, Phong at A Dong Tailors.
- Interesting archetecture:
- Easy access to country and village life
Cycling on island across from town, a stone’s throw away. Bottom left: girls soccer match…good to see.
- FOOD
Vietnam’s food is hard to beat when it comes to SEAsia. The delicate balance of sweet, sour, spices and herbs plus more than a pinch of French influence makes everyday/everywhere eating a gastronomic experience. And vegetarian options seem widely available if you avoid the dipping sauces (fish sauce is a key ingredient).
From Top Left: staff making Hoi An speciality, white rose; sampling home-brew rice wine; and famous banh mi sandwich. Yum.
This town is a must see in SE Asia!!
