Coffee Zone – South East of Medellín

Where to focus our few days in and around Zona Caferteria? Guide books gave us mixed advise but in the end we chose Salamina over Jardín in the Caldas department and Filandia over Salento in Quindó. (to fit the ‘less tridden’ bill).

Salamina

Out on the road from Medellín to Salamina. Emre guards the luggage. Views of stately Royal Palms.

Stunning vistas from our exquisite B & B just outside Salamina: Finca Hotel Mirador de Santa Marta.

Walking in and around town; coffee seedlings for transplanting.

Salamina, situated on top a steep hill, is still relatively untouched by big tourism. The town goes about its business as a centre for coffee, cattle and dairy.

This town and finca were really one of the highlights of our Colombia trip.

Our host Freddie put on an amazing dinner on our second night and introduces us to the best Aguardiente, native Colombian liquor.

Moving south to Finlandia. We hired a truck/taxi for this stint. Good thing we had our Maps.Me. Our hostel was in the hills where you needed good 4 wheel drive.

Another fabulous spot to bed down for a few nights, Casa Country Finca Hostel. Young Canadian owner, Greg, and his chef friend made us very welcome.

Hiking into town. Barry goes out a limb inspecting local house construction.

Scenes of Filandia.

Typical man about town.

Tranquility reigns in these parts.
