Like so many of the old historic cities, motorized rickshaws and motorbikes now rule the roads of the old town area. In the evenings the young and some not so young rev up and charge endlessly around the small hilly streets.
Regardless, if you focus on the water of Lake Pichola, the city retains its charm.
Jaiwana Haveli Hotel is a real treat, great location, lovely rooms, very good service. http://www.jaiwanahaveli.com

Lake Pichola with Taj Lake Palace on its own island; and old city view from Palace.

Views from our hotel rooftop restaurant: City Palace overlooking lake palaces, all aglow.
City Palace
Largest of many palaces in the state of Rajastan, it towers over Lake Pichola and is truly impressive with its towers, cupolas and balconies.

Visiting the Palace

Loved these security guys’ berets; more intricate detailing.

Stain glass windows and glass reflections

Murals, doors and highly crafted silver ornaments and furniture.
Added over the centuries to the founding palace (1599) are eleven separate smaller palaces.
Time for some exercise
Early one morning we mount bikes and head off on a two hour tour with our hotel manager Naeem.

Top: arriving on island; and popular place for early morning exercise.

Sunrise cycle: at Sateh Sagar Lake; adobe house in Badi village and Neemach Mata temple.

Feeling the early morning tranquility
……
We take a boat trip to Jagmandir Island, with its palace built in 1620. Cruised around the 5 star private hotel, Taj Lake Palace – no daytime visitors allowed here!

Water views… top Taj Lake Palace

Miscellaneous; elephants prominent in building murals.
And finally a rather touristy but fun ‘traditional dance and puppet show’:

Pedestrian bridge and show.
