Trekking in Hsipaw, Myanmar

We would have come through Hsipaw if we had been able to travel overland from Yunnan province, China, on way to Mandalay. The ‘road to Mandalay’ is closed due to fighting in Shan and Kachin states. We got the scoop from our guide who used to lead 3-day hikes out of Hsipaw to his home village but no longer can: not safe for tourists; not safe for him or any young men who would be scooped up to join the cause.

Two days was plenty for me. The experience took me back to ten years ago trekking in the Rockies. ( Terez/Jane are you out there??). I was challenged. Two days after getting travellers curse maybe I was in recovery mode…I don’t know but I have never wondered if I would make out before!

Of course when trying to keep up with guide and five others including Barry, taking pictures was not top of my list.

We visited several ethnic villages and stayed a small one of 16 homes. The people were welcoming and not very exposed to tourists. They delighted in having their pictures taken and laughed upon seeing them.

  1. Nice photos from the countryside. Can imagine it was not an easy trail. Hope your overnight stay did not have to many small animals disturbing your sleep.

  2. What an experience Kerryann 1 and I thought my motorcycle experiences were something – beautiful surroundings but very happy just to be looking at pictures and not experiencing it myself.

    Take care

    1. 😊 you could do a variation on motor bike. When the homestay Mom heard about my age she gave the guide a hard time for not sending for a motorbike to deliver me.😄

  3. Kerry …..I am loving your photos. Myanmar is such a magical country. If only it were well governed. Thanks for taking us with you!
