Chiang Rai, older but always in the shadow of Chiang Mai. Still, we enjoyed our short stay in this quieter town on our way to the Laotian border. Fewer attractions by far, the night market was nothing to sneeze at and the park had a beautiful flower festival happening. The city’s gold painted, ornate clock tower is its major landmark.
Our hotel host took us slightly out of town to the Disney-esque Rong Khun (White Temple).
Local artist/mastermind, Chaletmchai Kositpipat, and his life work: Rong Khun (White Temple)or Wat Huay Sai Khao.
Kisitipipat’s story is interesting. He designed, constructed and fully owns the temple. He charges foreigners an entrance fee to help reach his dream of expanding the project to add a Buddhist education and meditation centre. He limits donation amounts to ensure independence.

Now it’s Laos or bust, eh?! Enjoy!🐲🐉
