Vientiene…Hick Town or Metropolis?

I like the description in one of the guidebooks: if you come from another SE Asian capital you’ll think you’ve arrived at some outpost. On the otherhand,  if you come here from within Laos you’ll think you’ve landed in a metropolis!

We arrived in this capital city from Vang Vieng three hours north-east and while lacking highrises it does have its own Champs Élysée and Arc de Triomphe, well sort of:

Lane Xang Avenue with Patouxal standing at one end.

That  Luang is Laos’ most important religious building and its national symbol. Unfortunately it was undergoing restoration while we were there but here’s a look, top left:

Haw Pha Kaew, bottom right. Note the anti-smoking notice at That Luang, top left. Alot of smoking in this country.
Other highlights of Vientiene were a wonderful, cheap French/Laos restaurant find called Xang Khoo;  Haw Pha Kaew – an old personal temple of a king, now a museum of art and antiquities.

Above, view of solo fisherman on banks of Mekong, mighty Barry helping mystic creature with his load, Canadian live lobster anyone!?

  1. So was the lobster from the east or west coast of Canada? Hope it was our lobster but where were the scallops?
