Charming ZAGREB  – where west meets east

War and natural disasters have put their stamp on Zagreb. Yet it feels very much a living city where tourists, while clearly present, do not outnumber the locals, where neo-Gothic intermingles with communist era and modern archetecture. With its upper and lower old town connected  by a wonderful main square –  Trg Jelačić, this city grows on you.

Snipits of our walking tour with Barry’s resident nice, Vesna:

Coffee house, walkway between upper and lower town, St Mark’s Church (crests of city and country on tiled roof!)

Mural overlooking market square, Zagreb cathedral; center: organist at St Mark’s gives a demonstration.

Old doors and visit to Mirogoj Cemetery – great place to wander.

Famous Croatian sculptor, Iván Meštrović, works in Zagreb on right;and of “Gregory of Nin”  in Split. (Gregory of Nin was a medieval Croatian bishop who opposed the Pope and introduced the Croatian language into religious services 962 AD. onwards.)

Museum of Broken Relationships – artifacts and stories of lost love from near and far; Hamburger fest; one tribute to hometown boy, Tesla.

Evening out with Barry’s cousin Dragica and Vesna. Bottom: Croatian National Theatre.
