Southern India – the Journey Begins

We fly east…

Seven hour layover in Reykjavik you meet up with some pretty amazing locals.

Our trip – Toronto to Chennai (Madras) ends up being twenty eight hours long. On last lap, we have an unplanned 4 hour delay onboard… no air-conditioning, few updates, lack of refreshments. (we had our stash tho’! )

Fog in Delhi, afternoon snack upon before crashing into bed in Chennai.

Proof of marriage is required to get a room if a heterosexual couple in our hotel!

It seemed problematic to get a Sim card in short order allowing us to use Uber etc. So we opted to hire a driver for the day – about $C 40.

Tour included visits to:

St Thomas Mount

Cows having paid their visit; holy water being bottled on the Mount. Base of Mother Therese safe place to leave valuables apparently.

Beach

These young men ran to us for a selfie.

St Thomas Cathedral

Pole on shoreline said to have saved the cathédral from 2004 tsnumami.

Wedding service in cathedral

Kapalceshwarer Temple

Dusk light provides surreal scenes.

People we met

Requests for pictures with us common in this less touristy city. Daughter tries out different roles in nativity.

Parthasarathy Temple

Temple dedicated to Krishnu, one of the oldest in city.

Long day included typical dinner with our guide Canel.

Silks and Tamil-style love locks along the way.

  1. The colors of India are grand…just like Mexico. We’re enjoying beautiful warm weather here, too. Barry came over to Shadowfax yesterday. He said the warm felt great to him after the chill of Toronto. 💗😎

  4. Looks like another grand adventure Kerry Ann – the pictures you have sent over your various trips of temples and churches are just breath-taking. From the cold in Nova Scotia and our visit by the Polar Vortex I can atleast fantasize what you must be experiencing on this trip! Enjoy! Be well – N
