Hikkaduwa and about

We settled in here for 10 days. Basically a continuous strip along the old road running along the ocean the Ocean.

Home away from home in Hikkaduwa: Samanela Guesthouse
Local beach is our mainstay at Palm Beach Guest house and another nearby with a German bakery that we frequented for breakfast
Local alternative to the busy coastal road next to train tracks that we used regularly
Untouched szunami damage from 20 years ago

A day trip south to colonial Fort area of Galle by tuk tuks using less busy roads took us through villages and countryside:

Water buffalo giving us the eye

The Portuguese followed by the Dutch and, finally, the English each occupied the fort of Galle roughly 150 years each starting in the 16th century.

The Fort is the largest remaining fortress in Asia constructed by European powers (thank you wikipedia).

Typical Dutch era
Top:Along the seaboard towards Fort lighthouse; bottom: the beautiful Mareen mosque with baroque, islamic and British  victorian detailing.
Iconic popular Cylon/Sri Lanka products/services: gems and ayurveda spas
Ladies lace-making (Sri Lanka Craft Counil)
Public buildings;  bottom: local municipal court

Local Hikkaduwa Sunday market

Prepping breadfruit
Durian fruit at bottom right

We walk to the Szunami Picture Museum through back roads. The szunami occurred Dec 26 2014. Thirty thousand + perished in this area.

High school boys bike along as we walk and give us a sense of their lives; Big Buddha szunami memorial; common tractor trailor.

The picture museum is a labour of love. The host’s home was struck but family escaped. 20 minutes was the time they had to move to higher ground. Many went down to beach after first wave to grab the stranded fish. A mistake. Second wave arrived minutes later. Many foreigners perished as well: unbelieving. Poor warning system at the time. Supposed to be better now. ?

Tuk tuk hired to explore further afield on another day:

People are so friendly here
Serenity in the country
Hike to waterfall; leeches in creek we pass through
An audience
Tuktuk driver selecting ripe belly fruit, local cure for digestion issues. Dinner at Neela’s Beach Inn
Onward bound
