Hill town Ella

Our drive down from Nuwara Eliya to Ella is stunning, past numerous nurseries many between the windy roads and steep cliffs.

Vistas and nurseries
A village that has thrived on tourism in recent years. From top: Sinhala, Tamil, English
Cinnemon Homestay family host: mother, father, daughter. Father runs a fruit store as well.
Evening hike up Little Adam to view Adam’s peak near sunset
Catching the remaining sunbeams
Noisy little tourist town gives way to tranquility at our  homestay and own buddah shrine

A lovely young man working in the tourist info office recommends wikiloc as a great app for hiking. He informs us of a 300 km trek across the country, the Pekoe Trail: two sections connect thru Ella.

Ella to Demodera stage16 of Pekoe trail (9 km) past coffin building operation.

Nine Arches Bridge, tunnel and wasp escape hut if needed!
And up we go
Plantation high in the mountains
And up further
Tea plantations; goats eat the weeds in between tea plants!
Up yet still past wood carrier
Then down to Demodera train station. Beautiful vegetables as well as fruit abound in this climate

Next day we do Section 15 of the Pekoe Trail (10 km) Different landscape.

Thru lovely forests; Brazilian Red-cloaks
Stunning vistas
And more.
We reach the top
And descend into tea plantation
Past termite mounds
Down to the railway tracks; alot of old wooden sleepers are being replaced by concrete ones

Our stay at Cinnamon Homestay made our time in Ella super special:

Goodbye to Cinnamon Homestay with its A1 Sri Lankan breakfasts

We have booked the train to Kandy; this 6.5 hour journey is famous for passing through gorgeous scenery.

At the Ella train station. Chestnut-headed bee-eater sees us off.
