Indonesia via Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur

This trip starts in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia, a place I called home for eight months over 50 years ago!

We settle in to recover from flying more than half way around the world. Forty floors up, our apartment building is still not completely finished.

Contrasting views: view from apartment overlooking golf course; and  internal hallway looking down 40 levels.

The central area of Bukit Bentang where we stay is walkable to shopping, sights and lots of eateries.

No shortage of high end shopping here

KL is a city that shines upward with a huge variety of amazing structures…it is home to the second tallest building in the world – Merdeka 118. It dwarfs all else at 679 meters.

Views from KL Tower: Mederka 118 left, Petronis twin towers bottom right.
At 421 meters the six floor KL Tower is the 7th tallest in the world.
More height from the ground perspective: Petronis Twins and assortment of others.

A air conditioned car with tour-guide in training shuttles us around the city to key sites including:

Left: war memorial; right: king’s palace

The king’s role is rotated every five years among the nine sultans, rulers of the nine states.

National Mosque of Malaysia with Mederka 118 in background.

The National Mosque has the capacity of 15,000 people and the main roof looks like an umbrella, symbolic of the tropics!

Greens of old KL club; meeting of two (small) rivers that give KL its name: muddy confluence

We are in the rainy season but we head off the next day to the Batu Caves with its 282 colourful stairs leading up to Hindu temples in three caverns.

Up the stairs passing the green monkey god and golden Morugan statue
Fortunately we tailed the crowds, visiting late afternoon main cavern is impressive

Love Food=Love Malaysia

Have yet to give Barry his first taste of durian. Our starter of Gol Gappe at 1947 Namaste India . Amazing Indian food near KL Tower.

Street food in our neughbourhood is tempting but with go with Vietnamese at Sao Nam‘s. Note: Mangosteen prawn salad amazing and gets Michelin Bib mention. Sorry – to hungry to snap a photo.

Streetfood row at night. No room after Sao Nam’s

The malls are big destinations in this humid hot climate. It is Chinese New Year so there is even more red than usual.

Making rotis; our peking duck prep at Drag-i  Peking Duck Restaurant  in the Pavillion shopping Complex.

Fifty years has brought a lot of change to the city/country. All seems positive yet I miss the beautiful bright batik clothing women wore here in the 70s. I understand it is still prevalent in eastern provinces.
