Scotland Highlands East coast

A new misty day heading north from Dundee

Path through farms leading to one of two earth house settlements visited, dating to iron age: Ardestie and Carlungie
Pictish community farmed as well. Cellars were covered originally. Roman’s later used for storing preserves.
So yummy strawberries- a great find we stumbled upon – at East Scryne Fruit store….and their yummy scones, whipped cream and fresh butter
Popped into another well-known links golf course: Carnoustie
Arbroath port – a picturesque port town
We loaded up here with vacumed pack smoked haddock and an assortment of freshly baked seafood pies
Knitting/Crochet local group cheer things up with their displays, weather be damned!
An exercise break – a few km walk  in Montrose
Sea fowl
Sweet Lichen?
Another walk about in our destination town of Johnshaven. We passed by an Honesty box. Bottles of home made berry jams! We honestly come by two jars.
Old Anchor hotel in Johnshaven in morning. Didn’t stay up for Scottish FIFA game. Just as well. They lost.

We head north to Stonehaven to see the popular seaside fishing village and to hike from there to the Dunnottar Castle.

Passing through Inverbervie. Love the towns with backdrop of country
Following the coastline

Arriving in Stonehaven:

We park the car at the Harbour and begin our 3 km walk to Dunnottar Castle.
Beauty speaks for itself; war memorial in the distant far left.
Well hello there
It’s steep
Views as we draw nearer
Dunnottar Castle, history from 900 AD. Scottish and English kings fight for and claim it over the centuries.
A room with a view
Walls steeped in history

Was one of the strongest and inaccessible castles

The Scottish crown jewels were hidden here for safekeeping  in 1651
On way back after a picnic
Drive north to Fraserburgh to see the very first lighthouse in mainland Scotland.

The Kinnnird Head lighthouse was built within the 16th century castle in 1787. Locals objected to the castle being torn down so it wasn’t!

Decommissioned in 1991 to be replaced by an fiberglass automated one

Up until that time these were the lighthouse keepers quarters. Looks like a throwback to the ’50s. Paid well though.

….off to Banff for the night, Fife Lodge, a real treat.
